Let’s review the HR alphabet this month! Do you know what the following acronyms mean for your organization?

HIPAA

NLRA

OSH

CRA

ADA

PDA

COBRA

ADEA

OWBPA

FMLA

Perhaps you’re hoping ignorance is bliss. Or perhaps you think these just don’t apply to you. Unfortunately, these are just a few of many regulations that managers need to know and understand. Not all of these apply to small employers, although the first seven on the above list apply even if you have just one employee.

Keep in mind that some state laws are more restrictive than federal law, so employers must abide by the law that benefits employees the most.

If you want to keep current with the legal alphabet, subscribe to an online HR newsletter or periodically check government websites (such as www.dol.gov). Remember to review your employment practices periodically to make sure you are in compliance.
